Martha Wainwright: NHS saved my newborn's life
29th December 2009
One celebrity who may be the recipient of cashmere blankets and cashmere hats and mittens in the future is Martha Wainwright, the singer-songwriter who has praised the NHS for delivering her first child prematurely.
The artist, whose father Loudon and brother Rufus are also singer-songwriters, went into labour ten weeks early last month before she was due to travel to Brussels by train, she wrote in the Times.
Her husband, who also planned to head to New York that day, accompanied her to the University College London Hospital, where they prepared for the unexpected birth.
Archangelo, a son, was delivered successfully on November 16th and named after Brad's grandfather.
"The most remarkable thing though is the dedication of the staff. The nurses in particular have helped me because they have cared for my baby and shown me how to care for him," wrote the singer.
She went on to thank the NHS and stated that such a health system is the best option for any country.
The new mother performed alongside her musical family members and other big names such as Guy Garvey and Boy George at the Albert Hall on December 9th.
